I was asked why I wrote this song and what social/ political statement I was trying to convey. To which I replied that I had no real reason, other than entertainment, and no statement was intended.

I guess all the racial components surrounding the political landscape may have set the wheels in motion, but the song is purely fictitious.  “Charlotte” portrays a scandal of another time that would hardly be noticed by today’s societal standards. And it is based on  the southern bent for, “Interesting rumor”.

DIGITAL MUSIC FILE

Back in my home town of Charlotte
Every evening when that southern sun went down
There was a young girl named Scarlett
She’d walk to the edge of the town, she’d walk to
The edge of Charlotte town

Everybody wondered but no one said a word
See, her daddy was a big shot in the town
So everybody buttoned up the gossip that they heard
About Scarlett’s rendezvousing at sun down
About Scarlett’s rendezvousing at sun down

Chorus:
Around her shoulders she wore a yellow shawl
And a magnolia blossom in her hair
Now I’ve heard say that back in the day
No Carolina woman could compare that
Scarlett’s beauty went way beyond compare

When pretty little Scarlett started showing
They sent her to a family farther south
When six months had come and gone
They tore that baby from her arms
And sent a broken hearted Scarlett home again
And sent a broken hearted Scarlett home again

Now a strange woman’s walking down in Charlotte
Every evening ’round sun down she walks alone
She wonders what happened to the baby that she bore
Its the one misty memory she still owns
Its the one misty memory she still owns

Around her shoulders a faded yellow shawl
A crushed magnolia blossom in her hair
The locket ’round her neck holds a picture of someone
As dark as Scarlett once was young and fair
As dark as Scarlett once was young and fair

Now there’s a rumor circulating down in Charlotte
Another storm of gossip’s blowin’ ’round
They say that Scarlett’s son, taken North when he was young,
Is that Mullato senator from old Chicago town
