Heart Of Stone

Everything you said you wanted

You have now left far behind

All we have are memories

Now scattered in our minds

As is obvious to even a casual reader, I am thankfully proud to be an American and a Tennessee native. I am also thankful for a family that instilled this gratitude in me.

That Angus steak you enjoy is very likely from a descendant of the Keefauver Brothers' Angus farms of East Tennessee (my mother's side of the family). Coming from a heritage of land and cattle owners on both parents' side is probably why I dearly love the rural, bucolic grandeur of nature and that way of life. In a future post, I will share some pictures of our Pennsylvania land trust which is practically in our back yard.

The following song was written around the time of my first trip to Scotland. We traveled by rail from Dundee to Edinburgh to Glasgow and I saw the same kind of beauty there as is in much of east Tennessee. This scenic ride was very conducive to a re-appreciation of my home and heritage. The Clark name is so prevalent in Scotland (hence my roots).  In this song, "Home", I've combined my parents' memories with some of my own.  I was reminded of this song, which I had almost forgotten I'd written, when someone took home the People's Choice Award this week for a song by the same title. However, since I saw only a few minutes of the show, I don't know if it was current or taped, as I hear some of it was.

I have shared my songs with members of the present administration many times, receiving, what, at least, seemed to be genuine encouragements and appreciation. I sent, "Home" to Vice President Cheney on a coincidentally untimely and unfortunate date. The song arrived just following some baseless charge by the liberal hounds shouting for his, "Impeachment!" demanding that he, "Step down, get out and go home!" Being the super sensitive person I am, I felt the song might have been taken, in some way, as a subtle message. So, I wrote him to make sure he knew there was no such intent.  I was assured of his appreciation for this song that seemed to genuinely resonate with him, having grown up in Wyoming.

Home where my heart is turning

Home where the lilac's blooming

Bright in the morning light of May

Home where the nightfall

Heard the call of the night bird

At the end of a golden summer day

Chorus:

Home where my heart is turning

Home where my memory's burning

Brighter than the ruby red fire light

For me I see no way around it

And there's just no doubt about it

Home's where I wish I was tonight

Home where the banjo's playing soft

While the oak is swaying low

In the summer winds of June

Home where the children sing and wait

While the men are working late

By the amber August moon

Home where my heart is turning

Home like a tune returning time

In an echo far away

Home where the emerald days

Go by like a lazy vagabond

In no hurry on his way

Home where the banjo's playing soft

And the folks are staying strong

Through the winter winds of life

Home where the women cook and wait

While the men are working late

By the amber autumn light
